Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is saddened to hear of the death of HM The Queen and our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family at this time.

The museums, galleries and archives under the management of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) feature many objects relating to the monarchy, and its venues have welcomed several members of the Royal family on official visits over the years.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Great North Museum: Hancock in 2009, and is pictured with former Director of TWAM Alec Coles, looking at the Japanese spider crab in the Museum’s Living Planet Gallery.

“We are saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty the Queen."

Keith Merrin, Director of TWAM said:

“We are saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

“As an organisation who cares for much of our region’s rich heritage, we will be collecting objects that mark this sad but momentous occasion to be shared with future generations.”

Marion Beaton from Hebburn lived to be 107 – and received birthday cards from Queen Elizabeth II for her 100th [front of card pictured], 105th, 106th and 107th birthdays. The 100th, 105th and 106th cards are on display at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery.

Collection highlights include the portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II and images from Tyne & Wear Archives that illustrate her visits to the area like Swan Hunters shipyards, menus from state visits and programmes from the opening on the new Metro system.
